The world of Primers

                                                    Maybelline Smooth Prima

Ok we've covered brushes so now its time to talk the makeup and we are gonna start with our base, yes you got it todays post is all about primers. So sit back, relax and lets get down to the nitty gritty.

What is a primer?
A primer is basically a product you apply to your face before applying foundation/powders etc which smoothens/brightens/mattifies your skin and prepares it for foundation. Using a primer helps the foundation to apply more easily and smoothly, helps it to last longer and may also perform other functions like oil control, skin tightening, brightening etc. depending on which type of primer you use. Primers fill out the imperfections in texture of the skin like lines, pores etc. and give a smooth surface on which foundation can be applied with better results as compared to being applied on bare skin. They are generally liquid or cream based formulations.

How to choose the best primer for yourself :
Many primers have light-reflecting particles to make your skin look more radiant and give you an overall glow. There are also tinted primers for those looking to add some subtle colour (you know this is really helpful when you have that pasty winter complexion). The rule of thumb for choosing your primer base are the same as choosing moisturizer:

There is no set classification for primers but I’m going to try to  give a broad categorization here to help you choose the best primer for yourself :

Mattifying Primers : These are best suitable for oily or combination skin and as the name suggests, help in controlling oil. These prevent the skin becoming dull and oily  These can also be applied just on the T-Zone to control shine in that region. You can also use  Milk of Magnesia. Just rub it all over & let it dry then put on your makeup. It does  work.

Pore Minimizing Primers : These are meant for people with large open pores and as the name suggests, these primers help in making the pores appear smaller. I have not tried any of these personally so I don’t know well these work.

Brightening Primers : These primers generally contain a  dose of nutrients that work on the skin and impart a lovely glow to the skin. Some brightening primers may also contain light reflective particles that are responsible for the shine and glow. They are generally more moisturizing and creamy than the mattifying/pore minimizing primers and are suitable for all skin types (Except very oily).

Smoothening Primers : These are the primers that contain silicones and have a smooth, slippery touch. These products create a very smooth base on the skin on which foundation glides much more easily. They also make the foundation last longer and sometimes have oil control properties as well. Some women may be sensitive to silicones and they should avoid these smoothening primers.

Color Correcting Primers : Some primers contain trace amounts of color to counteract the red/yellow/orange tones in the skin. ELF and NYX make affordable color correcting primers which help in neutralizing the overly warm tones of the skin. Complimenting colors are used to get the neutralization for example Green tinged primer works for red tones, Lavender tinged primer works for yellow/orange tones.
Smashbox do a good selection of primers

For oily skin types: Stick to a gel-based or light lotion primer. Some primers tote extra protection for those plagued by oily skin complications. In case of an oily skin you should absolutely choose a makeup primer to refine your pores and to make sure your skin stays matt all day long. In case of dehyrated of dry skin you should choose a makeup primer with a richer texture, to prepare your skin for the foundation.
For dry skin types: A lotion or cream-based primer will help fill in and smooth any leftover dryness your moisturizer doesn’t take care of.  The BB cream is a very different product for all other makeup primer because you can also leave you BB cream on and don't apply any other foundation, if it has SPF in it.This is a very imporant step because in case of dry skin foundation is not even and gives lighter and darker patches. With a good moisturizing makeup primer you foundation will look nice and even.
BB cream are also very good makeup primers and they are formulated so that they suit almost any type of skin. You can use them as a makeup primer for dry skin, for oily skin, for redness and sensitive skin and to cover fine lines and wrinkles.
Top colour gives skin tone and bottom colour gives
an indication of coloured primer to use

Some points to keep in mind while purchasing primers :

  1. If you have sensitive skin and acne issues, please  check the ingredients of the product before purchasing.
  2. Choose a texture meant for your skin type, if you have oily skin go for a light lotion or gel type product. If you have dryness, go for a richer cream texture.
  3. Do a few test trials at home before using ANY new makeup product for the first time for a big event to make sure the formula works. If you’re purchasing a brightening primer for a special event like a wedding etc., try it out at home and take a few pictures to see how it looks in flash photos so that there are no unpleasant surprises.
  4. If you have skin that is prone to tanning, buy a primer which contains SPF. Some primers contain SPF .
  5. If you’re not sure how a product will react to your skin, ask for samples. Most high end brands like Clarins, MAC, Clinique, Shiseido offer samples with purchase. The samples have enough product to be used a few times which is sufficient to determine how the product fares with your skin.

I hope you find this post helpful. Watch out tomorrow for building a good foundation post which will hopefully be filled with everything you need to know about foundations.
Hopefully you are not finding these posts to long. Would if be better if I did them in part 1 and 2 like I did the brushes? what do you prefer?

Have a good day all stay safe and warm and dont forget to sparkle.

makeup brushes what for and how to pt 2

Good Morning,

I hope you are all sitting comfortably, got ya cuppa and are ready for part 2 of my brushes uses list lol. Your not, well hurry up go put kettle on and get yourself sorted and we shall begin. Its a cold day again here In Norway and after the slight let  up in the snow for most of yesterday it started again at about 10pm and its still falling. After I have written this post I will have to go out and clear the drive way, walk the dogs or rather be walked by the dogs and then I can come back and work on a morning routine video for you all to enjoy.
What are your plans for the day?

Before I forget to let you all know over on the facebook page I will be organizing monthly swaps if you want to be part of that then please go over, like the page and drop me a message.

Right onto the brush talk, well thats what your hear for right?!?

21 is a smudge brush... Is it rubber or sponge though? If it's rubbery that's the kind I like because it acts like an eraser on liner and mascara oops on the skin. Sponge is okay but doesn't do a good job at erasing the liner/mascara in my opinion. If it's rubber it's typically used to erase the oops and if it's sponge it's typically used to help smudge liner and shadow along the waterline. Can be used for other areas as well.

18 Is a concealer brush.

19 - 20, 22 - 31 are all different types of eyeshadow brushes.

22, 25 & 29 are angled brushes and that can help create sharp edges, these can be used on the brows (to fill in) or be used as a liner brush.

23, 27 & 30 are blending brushes, which  to help soften and blend shadows.

31 Is used to apply concealer to more delicate spots. Its a precision concealer brush. I use a smaller brush like this on my under eye area.

17 and 32 are some more liner brushes, they are so fine that they work perfectly for the crease of your lips or for drawing fine details if you are doing costume or special effects makeup.

Keep in mind just because a brush maybe a certain type of brush doesn't mean you have to use it for just that purpose. You also do not by any means need 32 or more brushes. To be perfectly honest with you I would say you can get by with only 7.

So what are the 7 makeup brushes you most need i hear you ask, well keep reading and I shall  tell you.

  1. Foundation Brush. A round fluffy and flat tipped brush. My must have brush is the real techniques brush. This type of brush is amazing for blending and buffering foundations on the skin. The shape makes it perfect for achieving a smooth application and it really works for covering pores for that flawless look.
  2. Powder Brush. A soft, round, large brush. this is a must have brush for dusting powder on your face, Why a brush versus a puff . . .  You will use less product with a brush and it will give you a more even natural looking finish.
  3. Blush/bronzer Brush. A soft medium sized dome shaped brush, with long and soft bristles works best. The softer and longer the bristles are the better. This is so that you do not disturb your foundation or irritate your skin.
  4. Eyeshadow Brush. A small stiff flat brush. This brush is used to apply all over eye shadow, as it gives a smooth finish. And more intense pigmentation that a fluffier brush would do.
  5. Eyeshadow Blending Brush. A flower shaped soft brush. This brush really gets into the crease of your eyes and helps to define your lid. It also is great at blending your colours together to get rid of any harsh lines between colours.
  6. Eye Liner/Brow Brush. A small angled brush. This can be used as a multi purpose brush, as it can be used on your lashline or to fill in your brows. I personally think this is the most user friendly of the eyeliner brushes as due to its slanted angle it is easy to maneuver.
  7.  Lip Brush. A small flat round tipped brush. This is the best shaped brush to create a defined lip.

Well that it for now folks. I hope you have found my brush posts useful. I will be back tomorrow with an all about Primers post. Hope you all have a great day and dont forget to sparkle.

Makeup Brushes what for and how to pt 1

Hello My darling Sparkles.

I must admit that one thing that really excites me is the thrill of brand new makeup brushes. With their clean and soft bristles…. You may or may not share my enthusiasm for brushes, but if you’re on the look out  for makeup brushes it’s important to know what you need. There are plenty of options out there but hopefully I can help you with the what brush is for what job. .

  1. Fan Brush: The soft bristles and flat, fan shape of this brush make it the ideal tool for gently sweeping on highlighting or bronzing powder for that soft-focus effect. I personally use it clean to sweep away excess product or redistribute powders without disrupting the rest of my makeup.
  2. Blush Brush: A more compact powder brush that can be used to apply blusher. To help locate the apples of your cheeks, smile and use short strokes to dust powder out toward your hairline.
  3. Powder Brush: Loosely packed bristles make for one big, fluffy brush with a rounded shape. It can be used with loose or pressed powders, just remember to tap off the excess before using sweeping motions to brush it across the face.
  4. Angled Brush: The angled shape allows for more precise shading. Softer, fluffy angled brushes are great for applying blush, bronzer and highlighter. Angled brushes which are stiffer, and have more densely packed bristles can be used for more controlled contouring.
  5. This is another fluffy face brush which can be used to do the same job as brushes 2-4.
  6. Tapered Foundation Brush: with its flexible bristles and gently tapered edge this brush is perfect for applying and blending liquid and cream foundations. I would start in the areas of the face that need the most coverage and use downward strokes for the smoothest, most natural application.
  7. As number 1.
  8. Is the lash/brow duo and is used typically to brush and shape the brow. The comb on the duo can also be used on the eyelashes to help blend fake lashes into natural ones but it can be  more tricky to do this for inexperienced users.
  9. Is called a Spoolie and is typically used to comb the lashes either before applying mascara or after to help blend the lashes better so the lashes don't look like spider legs. The Spoolie can also be used on the brow in place of the brow duo.
  10. and 13 and are both liners - lip/eyeliners - The thinner it it is the more likely it's an eyeliner while the thicker ones would be more for the lips but you can use any on the eyes and it would give you a different line thickness. It depends on what look you want to achieve.
  11. Sponge tip applicator. This is used for eyeshadows. It is good for smudging and blending of shadows or liners.
  12. Can be used to apply lip colour or eyeshadow.
  13. is covered in number 10.
  14. can be used to apply shadow to the crease, lid or brow area. I primarily use it to apply shadow to the crease then use a longer brush to blend. It can also be used as a smudge brush.
  15. is a square or flat brush can be used with cream shadows or as a lip brush, I personally like to use this brush along the lash line.
  16. This is another eyeshadow brush.

As you can see of the 16 brushes I have chosen today alot of them have interchangable uses. Personally I would give them a go, find what type of brush you like for that job and stick with it. Keep your brushes clean. Clean brushes will last longer and you’ll also eliminate bacteria on your brushes which eventually will end up on your face.

Why should you wash your makeup brushes?
  • old makeup builds up on the bristles
  • bacteria from the oils on your face build up on the brushes
  • if you use use brushes in multiple products like different shades of eye shadow you are cross-contaminating your makeup and shades.
I personally spray my brushes with a daily cleaner after every use, and then once a week I will clean them using a brush shampoo. However I know this is not always possible esp if you only have the set of brushes you are using so I would say once a month minimum after you have applied your days makeup make sure you care for your brushes.

Tomorrow I will run through some more brushes and my recommendations for must have makeup brushes.

I hope you like this post now when was the last time you cleaned your brushes?!?!?

Stay warm and dont forget to sparkle.

Sephora by OPI a quick review.

Good Afternoon folks,

For those who follow me on TWITTER you know I decided on a real lazy day today. We are on day 12 of none stop snow. I had no where to go so with no plans to leave the house, jumped in the shower and decided to have a day curled up watching romantic weepy films and paint my nails.

While I was over in America I picked up some Sephora by OPI nail varnish. today was the day to give it a go.

I had heard some great things about this brand but boy am I disappointed. It's thin and just like coloured water. 3 coats later it is streaky and has not given good coverage at all.

Now saying all that I do love the colour it is such a soft and girly hint of pinky peach that I am going to give it another go with a decent base and top coat and see what result we get from that.

I quite llike how it looks in this photo but it is upto coat 5 lol.

Anyway my sparkles I have to go get the hoover out the joys of having 3 huskys! Then it's time to cook dinner and do some research into a self tanner . . .  anyone got any suggestions?

Have a great day everyone and stay safe.

Tried something new

Good Afternoon my little Sparkles,

Been a busy day today and I thought why not give a new look a try. I love the 50's pin up/Rockabilly look and have always wanted to give it ago, but one thing or another always stopped me.

Well no more. There has been a few things that have happened already this year  that have made me  sit back and look at things a wee bit differently. I am not going to let anything stop me and intend to live life! Ok enough of the deep and meaningful stuff.

It took me forever to try and curl my hair with the straightners, I will not be doing that again in a hurry lol so my wish list is growing and now includes either a large barrel tong's or a curling wand. Do any of you have any suggestions as to which you prefer?

Is there any looks or styles you have wanted to try but have not given it ago yet?

Well here is the finished look, what do you think?

Makeup used today was,

Maxfactor face finity foundation in Golden 75
Physicians Formula super bb concealer in medium/deep
Maybelline Affinitone pressed powder in Light Sand Beige
GOSH 02 Smokey eyes palette in brown
Rimmel London Exaggerate eye liner in Noir
Maybelline the Falsies mascara in Noir Glamour.
WetnWild lipstick in 514A Cherry Frost.

It was the first time I have used the Lipstick but I am impressed with the pigment and the length of wear. I have had it on now for over 5 hours and not had to top it up once as yet. It also so far is not drying to my lips either.

On that front I am going to sign off for now and get dinner cooked.

Hope you are all having a great day and not suffering from them Monday Blues.

Snowy Sunday light look and new thoughts

Happy Sunday my Sparkles.

It's day 11 of none stop snow here in Norway, so this morning me and my boys (3 huskys) went out with the dog sledge and had loads of fun. Came home to a nice hot coffee and some skin loving time ,
After a nice face mask cleanse and tone I desided I really didn't want to put a full coverage foundation on today. I mean I only plan on staying in, crocheting and using social media, so I opted to try my wetnwild bb cream again.

For those of you who have read my blog posts or watch my YouTube videos for a bit you will know I was not overly impressed with the bb cream. But in the interest of giving things a chance I used it again. This time I'm pretty happy with it. I put some concealer on first under my eyes and the red spots round my nose and mouth which are pretty bad ATM due to being hormonal.
After using the bb cream I used a little powder and mascara and was good to go. I think using the concealer under the bb cream has made a big difference in how I feel about it. Today I'm happy with my skin tone using it. I think I may have to give it another go this week and see if this opinion stays or if I revert back to the not so happy camp.

On that note I am off to curl up with my crocheting on the sofa infringing of the wood fire

Hope you are all having a great day.

NYX Cosmetics UK and Geek Sheek and an interesting read from MyBeautyBunny

Good Morning and Happy Friday my Sparkles,

Hope you are all doing well and looking forward to the weekend. it is still snowing here in Norway, I think we are on day 6 of constant snow. whats your weather like?

I have a few things to talk with you about today so I hope you have got your coffee with ya.

As some of you may know I am now on TWITTER. I have been following Jen from my beautybunny who has put up a very interesting blog post about why why-i-got-plastic-surgery/ . It made a very good read and personally I found it interesting as I am waiting to have cosmetic surgery myself . . .  Maybe a future blog post eh, what do you guys think?

You know as much as I love living in Norway, sometimes it is just down right a pain in the butt. We don't get alot of known brands like the UK and USA and when we do the price is soo high compared its outrages. Thank god for online stores and friends and family back home in good old Blighty eh lol. (and dont even get me started on cheese, gravy and stuffing lol)
I ordered from .nyxcosmeticsstore Uk and it has arrived with my bestie in Scotland. I cannot wait for it to get to me so I can have a good old play.

The Eye shadow Palette's where on sale at 5.50 and I got them in
I dream of Jamaica
I dream of Aruba and
I dream of  St John.

The lip glosses are a set called Love Anthems and are only 10 pound..

I also got various lipsticks and some nail varnish and once I have them I will let you know coloours etc and do swatches so watch this space in the not tooo distant future.

As I sit and write this to you all I have gone for the plain geek sheek look. Ive not done my hair or makeup today, just washed put on fresh pj's lit my jasmin candle and got own to it. Im on a role and dont wanna stop lol. What about you, what are you up2?

I was chatting to a friend yesterday who, like me has very curly hair. Which can be the bane of my life at times. But I have a new item to add to my wish list to try. A curling wand. Do any of you have one? What do you think? She used one yesterday and says it is amazing on her hair. Instead of the many tight curls we both have she was able to make loose ringlets. Which let me tell you is no easy task. Unless you have hair that is curly and prone to frizz with the slightest hint of dampness you will not understand how much time money and energy is spent on products and new gadgets that are meant to help lol. Although I cant go wrong with moroccan oil and my straightners lol. whats your fav hair tool and worst hair nightmare?

well folks on that question I am going to sign off and get myself ready to do a room tour video.

Hope you all have a great day and dont forget to sparkle.

Stay warm have fun

Wish List Products

Hello Sparkles,

You know one of the things I love about social media is connecting with you all. Receiving your comments and ideas and sharing our hints and tips. Saying that today's post is more of a request than me sharing anything.

I have a few products I really want to try but I don't know which brand to buy. So this is where you guys come in. I would like to know which brands you recommend and why.

Ok first on the list is a dry shampoo. Now things to take into consideration are the fact I have really naturally curly hair so this pref has to be anti fizz or conditioning. If it even comes with theses options lol.

Second is a Gel or Liquid liner. I do not normal get on with these however I feel its about time I really tried to get the feel for them lol.

So what do you guys want to try over the coming month?

I have seriously been spending to much money recently but hey a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do right, Ive bought some NYX makeup and a new camera to hopefully shoot better quality videos and pictures. Im still having issues editing and I swear I am going to end up pulling my hair out lol.

Whats everyone got planned for today? I think I am going to chat to my bestie in Scotland on skype and have a skin pamper day.

Be careful and stay warm and dont forget to sparkle.

Wet n wild Spoiled Brat

Happy Sunday All,

Well today's makeup is brought to you mainly using Wet N Wild products. I fell in love with the Spoiled Brat eye shadow trio when I seen it and just had to buy it. The colour's are so bright and shimmer so nicely. Not only have I used the spoiled brat eye shadow trio but I also used
Wet N Wild's mega length mascara and
Colour icon eye and brow pencil in taupe.
I love all these products and the colour icon pencil is my fav to fill in my brows.

The rest of my face was done with the following products
L'Oreal True Match foundation in Golden Beige.
Revlon Age Defying concealer.
Nyx Butter Gloss in Merengue

Here is my finished look.

I have got a video to upload and my only issue was for a day time look I wasnt happy with the silver for me it was a little to much so I ended up blending it off my brow bone and using more mutted colour. but for an evening look it was great. I am happy with how it turned out minus the silver though I did leave it as an accent on the corner of my inner eye. That aspect would be down to person taste and nothing to do with the quality of the eye shadows, which are A1.

Well I am off to try and edit the video now lol I am not having much look with finding an easy to use editing program though arrrggghhh.

Stay warm and sparkle.

Lipsticks and glosses oh my

Well Here We go Another blog post with some more of the goodies I got in my latest Haul.

I went a little crazy on the whole lip colour front, but lets be honest here a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do right? ! ?

I got a variety of brands and colours and some of the bargins where just to good to miss out on. I most definately have my favorites out of the lot and I wonder if many of you agree with me. However because I have in no way used all these products as yet I am not going to do a review just first impressions.

I got some NYX cosmetics Lip Butters and Lipsticks. I LLLOOOOVVVEEEE the Lip Butters and now I am feeling a little disappointed for not getting more of them. Ive used one of the lipsticks to date and so far I am happy with them. Very silky and smooth to apply with good pigmentation and they last a fairly long time although if your a constant coffee drinker like me you may need to re apply a little bit, however I find that with all lip colours anyway regardless of whether drug store or high end.

I also got a selection of NYC lip products. The Lip stains I have used and loved. I have not had a chance to use any of the other products as yet but watch this space in the next week or two.

And of course I had to buy my all time fav budget brand of Wet N Wild. I just love their lip and eye products. I have so far used the matt lip stick (black case) and the gloss. LLLOOOOVVVEEEDD them both. Found them to be great coverage, great moisture and great price lol.

I have to admit this is not all of it lol. There are Revlon gloss's, Maybelline lip balms ELF lip products to name but a few. You  know the way some girls have a shoe and handbag thing well I am slowly starting to think mine is lip and eye products . . . . . Whats yours?

On that front I am going to sign off for now it is just past midnight here in Norway and I have to get my videos uploaded yet before going for my beauty sleep.....

Wet n wild peacock eyes

Good evening my sparkle's,

I hope you are all doing well and have had a great Saturday.

As you know I am a lover of the brand wet n wild and find their eye shadows to be richly pigmented and lip colours so smooth and pigmented I always stock up on them.

While I was away I did  make overs on two of the girls I was away with, I mean I got to build up my portfolio, and I had some willing people and lots of fun was had. One of the girls I did is much darker skinned than I am and this peacock eye looked amazing on her. I will see if I can find the picture and add it to the end of the post to give you all an idea on how different it looks on different skin tones.

I have also made a tutorial which will be up on my youtube channel later tonight if you care to watch it.

Quick review of the Wet N Wild eyeshadow used.

I used Wet N Wilds beauty benefits ultimate expressions eye shadow palette, which is a quad eye shadow from Dollar Tree. It is really pigmented and the viberancy of colours is amazing. I did not have to cake it on to get this deep colour it was one pat of the brush and it was there to stay.

The palette did not crumble on use and it does not give to much fall out when applying.

As with all makeup with a good base and a good setting routine it will last for hours and not have to be touched up. Once again a 10 out of 10 for this product.

And this is how it looked on a darker skin tone.

Thank you  for dropping by and reading my late night rambles. Hope to see you all again soon.

Stay safe and dont forget to Sparkle.

Make up make up and more make up

Well I am home with lots of new drugstore items and one high end foundation which I have to say I am in love with but more on that later.
I have stocked up on facial scrubs from the clean n clear range as I really like the facial wash. It leaves my skin sooo soft.
The Olay facial scrubs are a new thing to try but so far I'm liking them. They come with the little battery powered scrubber for deep cleaning. I tend to use it every night before bed and the clean and clear is my morning wake up soap.

I had heard so many good things about the Revlon colour stay and photo ready range of foundations that I have to admit to it being my first purchase. I opted for the colour stay moose foundation as I tend to favour full coverage due to the facial hair issues. Well let me tell you this foundation is great, a little goes a long way and it provides a lovely lasting full cover. Is so creamy but a little heavy on.
My slash out purchase was on the Kat Von D foundation which people let me tell you I fell in love with. It is so smooth and light, blend able and build able and covers my problem areas soooo well. For me it is such a shame I can only mail order it as this would so be my daily foundation if it was easy to get hold off but alas it's not here in Norway.
I also got a cover girl foundation and a bob cream by wet n wild in their fergie collection.

I may if gone a little OTT on te eyeshadow front lol although is that really possible I'm not so sure lol. I'm enjoying the wet n wild shadows they have some good pigmentation and are easy to blend. I am a little disappointed with the Revlon cream shadows though :( Not easy to use at all in my opinion and don't give very vivid colour.

We have all heard of the ELF contour blush and bronzing set so I just had to get one. The Revlon and NYX blushes are my fav though and I alternate between the two day to day.

Various nail varnish from Sally Hanson to NYC. OPI to wet n wild. The Sally Hanson insta dry is great it goes non smoothly with the professional style brush it's not quite as long wearing as I like but a good top coat will soon fix that. My least favorite has to be the NYC nail colours. They are far to watery and take quite a few coats to get a good colour build up. Although saying that they are worth the price of being the cheapest of the cheap so can't complain really.

Well obviously after my huge haul I am going to have to organize my draws a little better lol. I've not even included all the lip products or give away items I thought I would save that for tomorrow.

I have applied to be a wet n wild embassador and intend to hold some wet n wild parties here in Norway come the spring time.

How did you all do over Christmas and the New Year, did you hit the sales? I spent far to much money on clothes and makeup I have to admit but got some nice bargains as well.

What would you like to see this month on the blog or the you tube channel don't forget to let me know.

Stay warm and safe and don't forget to sparkle.

Love and foundation
